A 35-year-old man is in police custody following the recovery of a large quantity of suspected cannabis during an operation conducted by law enforcement officers in Bomet County.

The suspect, identified as Bernard Marwa, was arrested on Sunday after officers intercepted a vehicle along the Silibwet–Bomet road.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), police had attempted to stop the vehicle for inspection, but the driver allegedly ignored the orders and sped away, prompting a pursuit.
Investigators say officers followed the vehicle for several kilometres before it reached an area with a narrow road, making it difficult to continue the journey.
“The chase came to an abrupt end when the vehicle reached a narrow road, forcing the occupants to abandon it and flee on foot,” DCI noted.
Police officers immediately launched a search operation in the area. During the exercise, Bernard Marwa was apprehended while other occupants reportedly escaped.
Authorities said efforts are ongoing to trace and arrest the remaining suspects.
A search of the abandoned vehicle led to the discovery of eight bags containing approximately 1,600 rolls of cannabis sativa.
The substance was seized as evidence and taken into police custody for further investigations.
The vehicle used to transport the suspected drugs was also impounded and is being held as part of the investigation.
Police believe the cannabis was being transported for distribution, although investigators are still working to establish its source and intended destination. Detectives are also seeking to determine whether the suspect acted alone or was part of a larger trafficking network operating within the region.
The arrested suspect is expected to assist detectives with investigations before being presented in court to face possible drug trafficking-related charges.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has reiterated its commitment to combating the illegal drug trade and has urged members of the public to continue sharing information that could help authorities disrupt criminal activities.
