At Least 10 Feared Dead After Gold Mine Collapse in Rumos, West Pokot

At least 11 casualties have been reported following a rockfall incident at Rumos Hills in West Pokot County.

In a statement issued by the Kenya Red Cross on Thursday night, the incident occurred when community members were engaging in informal gold mining activities.

The Kenya Red Cross said responders at the scene reported that sounds are still being heard from beneath the collapsed site, heightening fears that more miners could be trapped underground.

“Rescue efforts are ongoing following a rockfall incident at Rumos Hills in West Pokot County, where community members were engaged in informal gold mining activities,” Kenya Red Cross stated.

“Sounds are still being heard from the collapsed site, raising fears that more people may be trapped underground.”

Among the casualties, three people sustained critical injuries and were rushed to Kapenguria Referral Hospital for specialized treatment.

The humanitarian organization further noted that rescue teams are currently at the scene supporting rescue operations alongside local authorities and community members as efforts to reach those feared trapped continue.
