The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has approved murder charges against students implicated in the deadly arson incident at Utumishi Girls Academy in Nakuru County that claimed 16 lives.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the ODPP said it had reviewed the preliminary inquiry file submitted by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) following the fire that broke out at the school on May 28, 2026.
“The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has received and reviewed the preliminary inquiry file submitted by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) regarding the tragic arson incident that occurred at Utumishi Girls Academy in Nakuru County on 28th May 2026,” the ODPP statement stated.
After assessing the evidence gathered during investigations, the Director of Public Prosecutions approved charges against the suspects, who will face 16 counts of murder in connection with the tragedy.
The prosecution agency expressed concern over a recent rise in cases of arson and other criminal acts in learning institutions across the country, warning that those found responsible for such offences will be held accountable under the law.
“The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions wishes to caution students and members of the public that individuals found culpable of criminal offences of this nature will be held accountable in accordance with the law,” the statement said.
The ODPP further extended its condolences to the families of the victims, friends, and the entire Utumishi Girls Academy community affected by the incident, describing the tragedy as a devastating loss.
The office reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice through a fair, impartial, and evidence-based prosecution process.
The ODPP also affirmed its dedication to upholding the rule of law, protecting the public interest, promoting the administration of justice, and ensuring accountability where criminal conduct is established through investigations.
The case is expected to proceed to court as the prosecution moves to formally charge the suspects in connection with one of the deadliest school fire incidents in recent years.
