KURA Announces Partial Closure of Major Nairobi CBD Roads for Up to Eight Months

The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has issued public notices alerting motorists to partial closures of several major roads in Nairobi CBD to facilitate bridge construction works as part of its urban mobility improvement programme.

In public notices issued on Monday, June 8, the closures will affect two key corridors and are scheduled to begin on Friday, 12th June 2026.

A section of Kenyatta Avenue, Valley Road, and Jakaya Kikwete Road will be partially closed from Friday, 12th June 2026, until Friday, 12th February 2027, spanning a total of eight months inclusive.

“This is to allow the contractor to undertake bridge construction works while ensuring the safety of road users and enhancing minimal traffic disruptions,” the notice read in part.

In a separate notice, a section of Haile Selassie Avenue will also be partially closed from Friday, 12th June 2026, to Monday, 12th October 2026, covering four months.

According to KURA, the partial closures are necessary to allow contractors to carry out essential bridge construction safely while keeping traffic disruptions to a minimum.

The authority urged all motorists to use the alternative routes and to comply with directions from traffic police and marshals deployed at the affected areas.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused as we endeavour to Transform Urban Mobility,” the notices stated.

These projects are part of KURA’s wider efforts to upgrade Nairobi’s aging infrastructure and ease chronic congestion in the central business district.

KURA further advised motorists to plan their trips ahead of time, consider using public transport where possible, and monitor official updates for any changes in traffic arrangements.
