President Donald Trump nominates Henry Wooster as US ambassador to Kenya

United States President Donald Trump has nominated veteran diplomat Henry Wooster to serve as the next US Ambassador to Kenya.

The nomination was announced by the White House on Tuesday, June 2, as part of a new batch of diplomatic appointments formally transmitted to the US Senate for consideration and confirmation.

If approved by the Senate, Wooster will assume the role as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States to Kenya, succeeding the current diplomatic leadership in Nairobi.

The White House said Wooster is a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service holding the rank of Minister-Counsellor, one of the highest levels within the U.S. diplomatic corps.

Wooster’s nomination marks the end of a prolonged period without a substantive US ambassador to Kenya, a post that has remained vacant since the election of President Donald Trump in November 2024.

In the interim, the US Embassy in Nairobi has been managed by a Chargé d’Affaires, who has been responsible for overseeing diplomatic operations pending the confirmation of a full ambassador.
