Netherlands Receives Evacuated Cruise Ship MV Hondius Passengers Amid Hantavirus Health Scare

Passengers evacuated from the cruise ship MV Hondius arrived safely in the Netherlands on Sunday after a hantavirus outbreak aboard the vessel raised international health concerns.

The flight from Tenerife, Spain, carried 26 passengers and crew members, including eight Dutch nationals, according to the Dutch foreign ministry.

The evacuees appeared calm and in good health as they disembarked from the aircraft at a military terminal in the Netherlands.

Some passengers were seen wearing medical masks and carrying backpacks and white plastic bags.

Authorities said all passengers will undergo quarantine for about six weeks as a precaution. Dutch residents will be isolated at home while foreign nationals will be taken to designated quarantine facilities.

“I am relieved that they are safely on their way after a period of uncertainty and that other passengers are travelling home via other routes,”said Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen.

Spanish civil protection chief Virginia Barcones said the group also included citizens from Belgium, Greece, Germany, Guatemala and Argentina.

The Dutch-flagged MV Hondius has drawn global attention after three passengers died during the hantavirus outbreak.

Two other evacuees who arrived in the Netherlands earlier tested positive for the virus and are currently receiving treatment in separate hospitals. Officials said both patients are in stable condition.

Health experts say there is currently no vaccine or specific treatment for hantavirus, which is common in parts of Argentina where the cruise ship began its journey in April.

Despite concerns surrounding the outbreak, health authorities have maintained that the risk to the wider public remains low and have discouraged comparisons with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ocean wide Expeditions, the ship’s operator, said once all passengers are evacuated, the vessel will sail to Rotterdam with a reduced crew onboard.
