A multi-agency security team has intercepted a public service vehicle along the Thika-Garissa Highway in Kanyonyoo, recovering approximately three kilograms of cannabis in a routine security operation.

According to the Naitional Police Service (NPS), the team mounted a roadblock on the Nairobi-Kitui route on Monday April 4, where the vehicle travelling from Nairobi to Kitui was stopped for inspection.
During verification checks and a search of passengers and luggage, officers discovered a black backpack containing the narcotics.
“As part of routine security procedures, a multi-agency security team mounted a roadblock in Kanyonyoo along the Thika–Garissa Highway yesterday, where they intercepted a public service vehicle travelling from Nairobi to Kitui,” NPS said.
“Upon a thorough search of passengers and their luggage, a black backpack belonging to one of the passengers was discovered, containing approximately three kilograms of Cannabis sativa,” NPS added.
The cannabis, identified as Cannabis sativa, had been wrapped in green polythene material and sealed with adhesive tape, in what officers believe was an attempt to evade detection.
NPS further noted that the security personnel recovered eight packets of rolling papers, each containing 100 sheets, as well as a digital weighing scale, indicating suspected intent to repack and distribute the drugs.
Preliminary interrogation revealed that the suspect allegedly sourced the substance from Bungoma County and was transporting it to Kitui Town for commercial distribution.
The suspect was arrested and taken to Kanyonyoo Police Station, where he is being held as the exhibits are secured ahead of arraignment.
Authorities said the seizure highlights the importance of coordinated security operations in disrupting drug trafficking networks, urging continued vigilance and public cooperation in reporting suspicious activity through official police channels.
