In a statement posted on his social media handles on Thursday April 16, Kalonzo requested Pope Leo intercede for Kenya to have lasting peace, social harmony and good leadership.

The Wiper leader also extended a warm welcome to the Pontiff, who is currently on his second day visit of Cameroon, after a successful tour of Algeria.

“On behalf of the Wiper Patriotic Front, and on my own behalf, I extend to you a most cordial and reverent welcome to the African continent on your maiden apostolic journey as the 267th Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church,” Kalonzo said.

“I humbly beseech Your Holiness to intercede in prayer on our behalf, that Kenya may be blessed with lasting peace, social harmony, and leaders who govern not for themselves, but for the common good of all our people,” he added.

Kalonzo noted that Pope Leo’s presence in Africa is not just symbolic diplomacy, but a manifestation of divine love expressed through human connection.

In a statement that drew on religious symbolism, Musyoka quoted the Latin phrase “Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est” translated as “Where charity and love are, God is there”, to emphasize unity, compassion, and shared humanity.

He said the Pope’s presence represents a “living testament” to that sacred truth, framing the visit as a moment of spiritual solidarity and affirmation of the continent’s faith tradition.

“In the great tradition of the Church, we are reminded that “Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est” Where charity and love are found, there is God. Your presence among us, Holy Father, is a living testament to that sacred truth.”

Pope Leo is undertaking an 10-day Africa tour, his first major international visit since becoming pontiff in May, in a continent that hosts about one-fifth of the world’s Catholic population.

He has already visited Algeria and is currently in Cameroon, with upcoming stops in Angola and Equatorial Guinea.
