Ruto Receives Report on Joint Development Plan to Transform Nairobi City

President William Ruto on Wednesday received a progress report on the implementation of the Cooperation Agreement between the National Government and Nairobi City County, highlighting strides made in joint development programmes across the capital.

The report was presented by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja alongside members of the Cooperation Agreement committee.

In a statement posted on X, President Ruto lauded the ongoing cooperation with the county government, saying the partnership will fast-track the transformation of the capital into a clean, orderly, and efficient city.

The President noted that the collaboration has already accelerated progress in several key sectors, including waste management, street lighting, power connectivity, road development, water supply, and sewerage systems.

He further highlighted the ongoing Nairobi River regeneration as a major milestone under the joint initiative as a major milestone under the joint initiative, describing it as critical to restoring the city’s environmental health.

“The Ng’ethu-Gigiri water works expansion will soon supply 51,000 cubic metres of water to the city while the Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Programme is on course, with the Gikomba Market river front having started,” Ruto said.

The Head of State also noted that a comprehensive waste management plan has been put in place, with more than 40 trucks already deployed to clear legacy waste within Nairobi. He added that 150 more trucks are being mobilized and are expected to be operational within the next three weeks, in a bid to restore cleanliness in the city.

Ruto also highlighted some of the joint projects under the pact including; installation of over 40,000 solar and smart streetlights and rehabilitating 10,000 existing ones, rolling out of power connections to informal settlements, and delivering 247km of new and rehabilitated roads with drainage and lighting, with 63 km already underway and 77 per cent complete.

Ruto stated that the government is on course to construct a modern Gikomba Market, which is expected to provide a safe and dignified working space for nearly 5,000 traders, while easing congestion and significantly reducing the risk of fire outbreaks.
