DCI Cracks Down on Fake Police Recruitment Scam, Suspect Arraigned in Court

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arraigned a suspect in connection with a scheme that defrauded members of the public of KSh 3,000,000 under the pretext of securing employment in the National Police Service.

The suspect; Mercy Prudence Mbaika Mutie

According to the DCI, three complainants reported the case at Wang’uru Police Station, alleging that the suspect, identified as Mercy Prudence Mbaika Mutie, coned them substantial sums of money, after claiming she could facilitate their recruitment into the service.

After receiving the funds, the suspect allegedly went into hiding and severed communication, prompting the victims to report the matter after their efforts to recover the money failed.

This prompted DCI detectives from Mwea East to launch investigations which led to the arrest of the suspect. “Following investigations by detectives from DCI Mwea East, the suspect was traced and arrested,” DCI noted.

After interrogation, Mutie was arraigned before the Wang’uru Law Courts, facing charges of conspiracy to defraud contrary to Section 317 of the Penal Code, and three counts of obtaining money by false pretences contrary to Section 313 of the Penal Code.

She was later on a KSh 500,000/= cash bail with a surety of the same amount.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) emphasized that the public should be vigilant against individuals who claim they can manipulate or fast-track recruitment into government institutions.

The DCI also reminded Kenyans that official recruitment processes, particularly into the National Police Service, are designed to be fully transparent and merit-based, ensuring that only qualified candidates are selected.
