Five more bodies have been recovered in the latest string of heavy downpours bringing the nationwide flood death toll to 71, according to the National Police Service (NPS).

In a statement released on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, the National Police Service (NPS) reported that the floods have displaced at least 2,622 families, caused by sudden flash storms that swept through residential areas and severely damaged critical infrastructure across multiple regions.
Nairobi, the epicentre of the floods, recorded 36 deaths, followed by the Eastern region with 19, Rift Valley with eight, Nyanza with four, Coast with three, and Central region with one death.
The service reiterated that it will continue with search and rescue operations with rains projected to continue countrywide.
“The National Police Service, in collaboration with all relevant partners, has continued to undertake serious search and rescue operations across the country,” read the statement.
A recent update from the Kenya Meteorological Department indicates that more heavy rainfall is expected in the coming days, particularly in flood-prone regions. Authorities have urged residents to exercise extreme caution.
The National Police Service (NPS) also urged residents and travelers in flood-prone areas to strictly follow safety advisories, while commending the swift and selfless efforts of volunteers and first responders who have been working under challenging conditions to reach stranded families.
“We commend all responders, volunteers and partners for their swift and selfless actions,” NPS said.
The service noted that emergency response teams remains on high alert and is actively deployed on the ground ready to respond to any distress situations.
