Homabay County Governor Gladys Wanga has appointed Danish Otieno Onyango as the Deputy Governor following the resignation of Joseph Oyugi Magwanga.

Until his appointment, Danish Onyango served as the County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Roads, Public Works, Transport and Infrastructure.

In a statement dated March 16, 2026, Wanga stated that Onyango would continue serving in the position even after securing approval by the County Assembly.

“Pursuant to a vacancy in the office of the deputy governor in Homabay following the resignation by the previous holder, and in compliance with the county government act, I do hereby nominate Danish Otieno Onyango to serve as the deputy governor, subject to approval by the county assembly,” Wanga said in a statement.

Wanga said that Onyang’s vast experience in Public Service made him well-suited for the role. She also underscored Onyang’os contribution to Homa Bay County’s growth.

“I am confident he will be able to serve the county in this new DG role based on his exemplary performance since 2022,” said Wanga.

“He has led landmark transformative projects, raising considerable resources, for instance, the Sh1.4 billion KISIP2 Project in the informal settlements,” wrote Wanga.

Danish Onyango hails from Kabondo Kasipul constituency and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics, Political Science, and Public Administration from the University of Nairobi, as well as a Master of Arts in Development Studies.

Pending approval by the County Assembly, Onyango is set to take up the position left vacant after Oyugi Magwanga resigned in February, marking a key step in filling the leadership gap.

Before his resignation, Magwanga cited frustrations that he said had made it difficult for him to effectively discharge his duties.

Wanga also nominated Elijah Obiny Dede to head the Trade, Industry, Tourism, Marketing and Co-operative Development docket and Isaac Victor Ongiri to serve as the CECM for Governance, Administration, Communication and Devolution.
