NTSA announces the rollout of instant traffic fines system

National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced that the Instant Fines Traffic Management System is now live.

In a public notice issued on Monday March 9, 2026, NTSA stated that the system will automatically issue traffic violation alerts through SMS, to motorists who commit traffic offenses.

“The Instant Fines Traffic Management System is now live. The system will automatically issue traffic violation notifications via SMS to motorists where applicable,” NTSA stated.

According to NTSA, the move seeks to promote transparency, efficiency and improve accountability in traffic enforcement by phasing out manual methods.

The Authority asserted that the process is fully automated and operates without human intervention. Subsequently, motorists who receive the notifications will be required to pay the fines within seven days.

Failure to pay the fine due within the seven-day period will result in the amount due earning interest. NTSA further warned that the vehicle or driver with pending fine will not be able to transact on NTSA service platforms until the fine is settled.

The authority urged motorists to comply with traffic regulations and respond promptly to official communication regarding any offences recorded under the new digital system.

“Motorists are advised to observe all traffic regulations and respond promptly to any official notifications received. Further details will be communicated through the official government channels,” the authority added.

NTSA also noted that further details will be communicated through the official government channels.

This comes days after President William Ruto directed the Ministry of Roads and Transport to rollout instant traffic fine system and smart cameras to combat rising road fatalities and corruption.

Ruto issued the order on March 1, 2026, during a brief with the National Council on the Administration of Justice at State House, Nairobi, where he confronted the Transport CS Davis Chirchir and the news NTSA Director General Nashon Kondiwa over the slow rollout of the system.
