Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has ordered roadside traders operating along Thika Superhighway at Kihunguro (both bounds), Allsops (both bounds) and Delview sections, to remove and clear their wares within seven days.
In a notice dated February 23, 2026, KeNHA cited the construction of designated roadside stations along the busy corridor as the primary reason for issuing the vacate notice.
The authority further stated that the roadside stations will enhance corridor functionality, improve safety standards and alleviate traffic congestion.
”This is to facilitate the construction of designated roadside stations intended to enhance corridor functionality, improve safety standards, and alleviate traffic congestion along the affected sections,” stated the notice.
“The project is part of the Authority’s ongoing road safety improvement initiatives that seek to reduce accidents, enhance order within the road reserve, and ensure the unobstructed flow of traffic along the highway,” KeNHA added.
KeNHA urged the affected traders to comply within the stipulated timeframe to avoid eviction.
The announcement comes barely a week after KeNHA conducted demolitions at Githurai Market on February 19, sparking condemnation and unrest that resulted in running battles between police and irate traders, disrupting the flow of traffic in the area.
However, KeNHA justified the demolitions, asserting that they were carried out lawfully, noting that Githurai area had recorded road safety incidents following concerns over makeshift structures built on road reserves.
“The structures had encroached onto the road reserve, posing significant safety risks to thousands of motorists and pedestrians within the busy market area. Over time, this section has recorded numerous road safety incidents – a trend the Authority is firmly committed to reverse,” KeNHA stated.
Traders opposing the demolitions claim they were neither consulted nor given relocation plans. Others say that the eviction would leave them without income.
Unmoved by the backlash, KeNHA announced that similar actions would be carried out at Roysambu Roundabout and other sections along the highway.
The planned bus parks are intended to provide matatus and buses with designated spaces for passenger pick-ups and drop-offs, thereby reducing congestion and improving traffic efficiency.
