Kenya Railways has announced the temporary suspension of the Limuru commuter train service under the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service (NCRS), citing unavoidable circumstances.

In a public notice issued on January 8, 2026, the corporation said that the commuter train that operates between Nairobi Central Station and Limuru in the morning and evening hours will not run on Friday, January 9, 2026.
The suspension, according to the notice, affects both inbound and outbound services on the Limuru route for the day.
Kenya Railways did not disclose the specific details regarding the circumstance that led to the suspension of the commuter train, but it assured customers that it was temporary.
“Service will resume on Monday, January 9, 2026”, the statement read.
The Limuru Commuter line is one of the main routes under the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service. It serves daily passengers who travel between Limuru, Kikuyu, Dagoretti and Nairobi’s Central Business District.
The service plays an important role in reducing traffic congestion along the Nairobi-Limuru corridor, especially during peak hours.
Kenya Railways offered their sincere apologies to the affected passengers for any inconveniences they might have caused by the suspension and advised commuters to seek alternative means of transport for the affected day.
“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused”, the notice which was signed by the Managing Director stated.
Kenya Railways further indicated that normal operations on the commuter line will resume as scheduled after the weekend, with trains expected to operate from Monday morning.
Members of the public seeking additional information were advised to reach out to the corporation through its official communication channels, including the customer service phone lines and email.
The Nairobi Commuter Rail Service operates several routes within the Nairobi metropolitan area, including lines to Syokimau, Ruiru, Embakasi Village and Kikuyu, as part of efforts to provide affordable and reliable public transport.
