Mombasa County Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir has appointed former personal aide to the late Raila Odinga, Maurice Ogeta, to serve as the Security Advisor in the county government.

In a communique issued on Thursday January 8, 2026, Governor Nassir noted that the appointment follows the establishment of new positions by the County Public Service Board.
“I have today made appointments in the Executive Office of the Governor following the establishment of positions by the Mombasa County Public Service Board, in line with the provisions of the law,” Nassir stated.
Nassir asserted that Ogeta’s appointment was motivated by his extensive experience in the security sector, including his years of service to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
“Mr. Maurice Ogeta has been appointed to serve as Advisor, Security Affairs in the County Government of Mombasa. This appointment is informed by his many years of experience and deep institutional knowledge built at local, regional and global levels, including his service to our late Founding Party Leader, H. E. Raila Odinga, C.G.H.”
The governor also named Ken Ambani his advisor on creative arts. He said that his knowledge and experience in the sector would help revive and grow the creative industry in Mombasa.
“I have also appointed Ken Ambani as my Advisor on Creative Arts. His wealth of knowledge and first-hand experience in the sector will be instrumental as we work to revive and grow the creative industry in Mombasa for the benefit of our artists, youth and the wider economy.”
Speaking during the burial of Raila Odinga on October 19, 2025, President William Ruto announced that Ogeta would remain part of the initiative to honour and preserve Raila’s legacy.
However, the President is yet to fulfil the promise.
“Maurice, I want to tell you, as the Government of Kenya looks after Raila’s legacy, you too will stand guard with us to look after it, together with all the other people who worked with Baba,” the President said.
Ogeta, renowned for his calm demeanor and exceptional professionalism, served as Raila Odinga’s bodyguard for 18 years, loyally standing by him even during tense anti-government protests.
He was by Raila’s side during his final moments in India and remained with him after his passing, accompanying his body until the burial at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi.
