The Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Igonga has directed the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to expedite investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collapse of a 16-storey building in Nairobi’s South C.

In a statement issued on Sunday January 4, 2026, Igonga ordered IG Kanja to submit a comprehensive report to the DPP within seven days.
The DPP emphasized that no stone should be left unturned during the investigation and that all individuals who enabled the unsafe construction should be held accountable.
“Towards holding every person who enabled the unsafe construction to account, whether public or private individuals, the DPP has directed the Inspector General of Police to immediately initiate and or expedite investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident,” DPP stated.
“The DPP has directed the IGP to record statements from all relevant persons, including the developer and the contractor, and the persons responsible for the relevant building and construction approvals, inspections, and enforcement, and forward the resultant file for perusal and action within 7 days from the date hereof,” DPP added.
The building came down on Friday January 2, trapping two workers inside.
Kenya Red Cross responded swiftly, cordoning the area off as the National Disaster Management Unit, Nairobi City County, the National Police Service continued search and rescue operations.
On Sunday January 4, the rescue teams retrieved one body from the rubble of the collapsed building as search for the second individual now enters the fourth day.
Nairobi County government stated that the building located at Plot No. 209/5909/10 along Kiganjo Muhoho Avenue Juction, South C Ward, Lang’ata Sub-County, had been flagged earlier, but constructions continued despite the warnings.
Governor Johnson Sakaja during his visit to the scene, defended his administration against accusations, asserting that the building’s developers blatantly violated regulations and even went ahead to construct additional floors despite having obtained approval for only 12 floors.
“It is worth noting that the site has been subject to enforcement action by NCCG on varying dates in May, July, and December 2025 over a number of infractions,” the county said.
