Law enforcement officers in Laare Police Station in Meru County have arrested six suspects linked to a horrifying gang rape incident that took place on Monday in Laare town, Igembe North Sub-County.

According to the authorities, the arrest was done following a distress call received from members of the public, revealing that a young woman was in grave danger, being gang raped by a group of men who were taking part in a traditional circumcision procession.
Responding swiftly, the officers rushed to the scene and found the victim in total distress, her clothes torn and her spirit bruised. She was quickly escorted to Nyambene Hospital to seek medical attention.
The police, with an aim of bringing the perpetrators to justice, launched an extensive manhunt. With the help of the forensic leads, the officers executed targeted raids in Irinde, Lubwa, and Kuarama areas where they successfully flushed the six suspects namely, Dennis Mwirigi, Ismael Gichunge, Elijah Muriki, Isaac Ntomauta, Joseph Marete and Phineas Mutali out of their hide outs.
According to the police, the suspects were hiding in different locations to avoid getting arrested. The six now join three other suspects who were previously apprehended on December 1st, 2025, all currently in custody undergoing processing before being arraigned in court.
As the investigations unfolds, the authorities have asserted that detectives remain relentlessly focused on identifying and apprehending additional suspects involved in the crime, and therefore ensuring that no perpetrator escapes justice.
A human rights activist Kathure Thiakunu, who is also the Jelida Foundation director applauded the officers for acting swiftly noting that similar cases have had tendencies of going unpunished.
The authorities have also come out to condemn the abuse of cultural ceremonies to carry out violence, urging the community members to work together with the officers in the ongoing investigations in order to get hold of other culprits.
