A month after the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, the Odinga family has been hit by tragedy again following the death of Beryl Achieng’ Odinga, Raila’s younger sister.

President William Ruto has led the nation in mourning the late Beryl, eulogizing her as a pioneering figure whose career distinguished her as one of the continent’s early female professionals in her field.
In a statement of condolence shared on Tuesday, President Ruto highlighted Beryl’s exceptional contributions to urban development, noting her influential role in Zimbabwe during the 1980s.
“Beryl made a significant mark as an exceptional urban planner in Zimbabwe in the 1980s, where her expertise and commitment contributed to transformative urban development,” President Ruto stated.
He further recognised her leadership in Kenya, most notably her tenure as Chairperson of the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company from 2020, where she played a key role in strengthening the institution’s governance and service delivery.
“We mourn the loss of a great intellectual and a pioneering woman who opened doors and lit the path for many career women. On my own behalf and that of all Kenyans, I convey heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga on Beryl’s passing. May God’s grace, comfort, and compassion be with you during this difficult time,”said president Ruto.
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka also paid a heartfelt tribute saying he received the news of her passing with great sadness, recalling their early years together at the University of Nairobi where they were classmates in the School of Law.
“I remember our time together at the University of Nairobi, where we pursued law. Beryl carried herself with calm confidence, humility, and a strong sense of purpose—qualities that defined her throughout her life,” he said.
Musyoka described Beryl as an inspiring and steady presence who left a lasting impression on those she interacted with. He noted that her values, professionalism, and gentle character earned her respect across generational and political lines.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga was among the regional leaders who expressed deep sorrow over Beryl’s death, describing the news as a heavy blow to the community, especially in the wake of Raila Odinga’s passing.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Madam Beryl Achieng’ Odinga,” she said in a statement issued on behalf of the people of Homa Bay County. I want to take this moment, on behalf of the people of Homa Bay County and my family, to extend my heartfelt condolences to the entire family of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga during this incredibly difficult time,”said Wanga .
Governor Wanga reflected on the emotional strain the Odinga family has endured in recent weeks, calling for strength, unity, and continued support for the grieving household.
Despite maintaining a relatively quiet public life, Beryl Achieng’ Odinga is remembered as a committed professional, a devoted family member, and a pillar of strength within her circles. Her contributions to urban development, public administration, and community service have been highlighted as enduring elements of her legacy.
