The Kenya High Commission in Dar es Salaam has reassured Kenyans living in Tanzania that normalcy has been restored following the deadly protests witnessed during and after the elections.

In a statement shared by the State Department for Foreign Affairs, the High Commission noted that the Mission has resumed its normal operations following the lifting of the curfew imposed after tension flared following a disputed election.

“The Kenya High Commission in Dar es Salaam wishes to give reassurance to the Kenyan Community in Tanzania that the Mission has resumed normal operations following the lifting of the curfew and the restrictions put in place after the General elections in Tanzania,” the statement read in part.

The Mission also stated that it is in constant communication with the relevant authorities in Tanzania to ensure that Kenyan citizens are safe and protected. “The welfare and safety of Kenyans residing in Tanzania remains a top priority for the Mission.”

Kenyan Community in Tanzania were also urged to continue with their normal activities while also observing the local laws.

“Further, the Mission encourages all Kenyans to remain calm, vigilant, observe local laws, and to promptly report any security concerns or distress cases to the High Commission,” the statement stated.

Protests erupted in most towns across Tanzania on October 29, after President Samia Suluhu’s main competitors were barred from participating in the elections.

Hundreds are reported to have lost their lives, including a Kenyan, John Okoth Ogutu, who was working in Dar es Salaam as a teacher.

According to Vocal Africa CEO and Activist Hussein Khalid, Mr. Ogutu was killed in Ubungo area and his body is currently lying at the Mwananyamala mortuary.
