Kiambu doctors call off strike after reaching deal with county government

Kiambu County doctors’ strike which has lasted for a period of 150 days has officially been called off, following an agreement with the County Government and Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists Dentist Union(KMPDU).

KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah shakes hands with Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi

KMPDU’s decision to end the strike comes after a successful mediation by the Council of Governors (COG) on Friday October 24, 2025.

Speaking to the press after signing the agreement, KMPDU secretary general Davji Atellah directed Kiambu County doctors to report back to work on Monday, October 27, 2025.

Atellah revealed that the Union and the county government had reached a settlement that would ensure all their concerns are addressed.

According to Atellah, grievances ranging from promotions, salary delays, doctors transfer, statutory deductions and medical insurance would be resolved as part of the agreement.

“I want to say, that the strike that began on May 26, 2025, that has now gone for over 150 days, is hereby called off,” he declared.

“We would like to ask the doctors to resume their jobs on Monday, October 27, 2025 with immediate effect,” Atellah added.

Whip of the Council of Governors Muthomi Njuki urged doctors to always resort to dialogue to find solutions to problems, instead of compromising the health sector.

He also noted that the County would pay the striking doctors one month’s salary in addition to their October salary. The pending three months’ wages would be carried forward to 2026/2027 financial year.

“We appeal to the doctors to always remember their highest call which is to protect and preserve life. We urge all doctors in Kiambu County to accept the goodwill extended by the County Government and for the KMPDU to call off the strike,” governor Njuki said.

“We remain committed to the doctors’ cause for the betterment of the lives of Kenyans.”

Kiambu residents have endured months of health service interruptions due to doctors strike.
