Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has announced a temporary suspension of operations at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
In a statement released on Thursday, KCAA stated that the airport was closed due to an ongoing security situation following the arrival of the body of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
“Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) informs the public that operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) have been temporarily suspended due to an ongoing security situation following the arrival of the remains of the late Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga, former Prime Minister of Kenya,” KCAA statement read.
Immediately the plane carrying Odinga’s remains landed at JKIA, a massive crowd, primarily consisting of his supporters, overpowered security personnel and gained access to the VIP section and restricted areas of the airport.
KCAA asserted that the act prompted a precautionary closure to allow security teams to restore order and ensure safety.
“Members of the public and travelers are advised to remain calm and avoid the airport area until further notice. Normal operations will resume once the airport is declared secure in the next two hours,” KCAA said.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga died on Wednesday October 15, 2025, while undergoing treatment in India.
His body arrived at JKIA on Thursday at exactly 9:30 am, with public viewing scheduled to take place at Kasarani Stadium.
