The United States Embassy in Nairobi has announced that it will suspend operations on Friday, July 3, 2026, in observance of the United States’ Independence Day holiday set on the same day.

The embassy, in a public notice issued on Thursday said all its offices would remain closed for the day, with normal operations expected to resume after the holiday.
“The U.S. Embassy in Kenya will be closed on Friday, July 3, 2026, in observance of Independence Day!” the embassy said in its official announcement.
Although Independence Day in the United States is celebrated annually on July 4, this year’s federal observance falls on Friday, July 3, because July 4 lands on a Saturday. Under U.S. federal holiday regulations, when a public holiday falls on a weekend, it is typically observed on the nearest weekday.
The temporary closure means routine embassy services, including visa appointments, passport services, and other non-emergency consular operations, will not be available on Friday. Americans requiring urgent consular assistance are, however, advised to follow the embassy’s emergency contact procedures.
The Fourth of July commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, when the thirteen American colonies formally declared independence from Great Britain, marking the birth of the United States as a sovereign nation.
While the Continental Congress voted in favour of independence on July 2, the Declaration, drafted primarily by Thomas Jefferson and later amended by Congress, was officially adopted two days later.
Independence Day remains one of the most significant holidays in the United States and is traditionally marked with fireworks displays, parades, concerts, community events, barbecues, sporting activities and patriotic ceremonies celebrating the country’s history, freedoms and democratic values.
The Nairobi embassy routinely observes both Kenyan and U.S. public holidays as part of its annual operating calendar, with services resuming on the next working day following official holiday closures. Travellers and visa applicants are encouraged to plan their visits accordingly to avoid inconvenience.
