Prof. Ayub Njoroge Gitau has officially been appointed the 9th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nairobi (UoN) following PSC interviews.

The announcement was made by the University of Nairobi Council, following a special sitting held on May 14, 2026, to deliberate on leadership changes at the institution.
“The University of Nairobi Council, following consultations in a special sitting held on Thursday, May 14, 2026, has announced key leadership appointments ushering in a new era for the institution,” the council announced.
Before his appointment, Prof Gitau served as the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the university and has been involved in several institutional and international academic programmes.
The University Council also appointed Prof. Josiah Omollo Aduda as the new Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Finance, Planning and Development.
According to the Council, Prof. Josiah brings over 25 years of experience in academic leadership, governance, and institutional development.
He has previously served in key leadership roles including Dean of the School of Business and Chair of the Department of Finance and Accounting, contributing significantly to academic growth and administrative excellence.
“In his new role, he is expected to strengthen financial sustainability, enhance resource mobilization, and support the University’s long-term development and transformation agenda,” the Council stated.
Council Chair Chacha Nyaogotti stated: “These appointments mark a new chapter for the University of Nairobi as we strengthen leadership for excellence, innovation, and global competitiveness.”
The Council also appreciated Prof. Margaret Jesang Hutchinson for her service as Acting Vice Chancellor during the transition period, applauding her dedication and leadership.
Prof Hutchinson had been serving in an acting capacity since August 2024 after the suspension of Prof Kiama before his eventual departure in 2025.
