President Ruto Appoints Samuel Muchina Nyaga to Nairobi Rivers Commission

President William Ruto has formally appointed Samuel Muchina Nyaga, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate in the recently concluded Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, as a member of the Nairobi Rivers Commission.

The appointment was made through Gazette Notice No. 11217, published on Wednesday, 22 July 2026.

According to the Gazette Notice, President Ruto exercised his powers under the Constitution of Kenya, the Environmental Management and Co-ordination Act, the Climate Change Act, as read together with Section 51(1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that, pursuant to Gazette Notice No. 13907 of 2024, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Samuel Muchina Nyaga to be a Member of the Nairobi Rivers Commission, with effect from the 22nd July, 2026,” read the gazette notice.

The Gazette Notice further revokes the appointment of Amos Chege Mugo, who previously served as a member of the Commission. “The appointment of Amos Chege Mugo is revoked,” the notice read.

Muchina’s appointment comes shortly after he contested the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election on the UDA ticket, where he lost to DCP’s Sammy Waweru.

The Nairobi Rivers Commission was established to coordinate the rehabilitation, protection and sustainable management of Nairobi’s rivers as part of the government’s broader environmental restoration agenda.

The Commission brings together representatives from national and county governments, environmental agencies and other stakeholders to oversee the implementation of the Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Programme.

Muchina’s appointment takes effect immediately, from 22 July 2026, replacing Amos Chege Mugo as a member of the Commission.
