Notorious Killer-Turned-Armed Robber Arrested by DCI in Meru

DCI detectives from Meru county together with officers from the Kenya Police Service, have apprehended a 47-year-old man suspected of carrying out violent robberies in Igembe.

According to the DCI, Jason Kobia Mucoka, an ex-convict, is also linked to cases of terrorizing residents in Mutuati, Laare and Maua areas.

In a statement on Wednesday, 11 March 2026, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations revealed that Jason Kobia had recently served a 15-year sentence for killing his own brother.

The investigative agency stated that upon release, Kobia armed himself with an illegal firearm, assembled criminal gangs and began terrorizing anyone who confronted him.

“Fresh out of prison after serving 15 years for murdering his own brother, the suspect wasted no time. He armed himself with an illegal firearm, recruited criminal gangs (some already in custody, others still being pursued), and brazenly threatened to shoot anyone who dared challenge him in the Kabachi area,” DCI stated.

Acting on a solid intelligence, the joint team swooped in on Kobia’s hideout and arrested him in a swift and decisive operation.

Jason Kobia Mucoka was interrogated and led detectives to his hidden cache. During a thorough search, officers recovered a Pachet SMG loaded with six rounds of 9mm ammunition, concealed in a nearby miraa plantation just metres from his home.

DCI said the weapon and ammunition have been secured as exhibits and are en route to the National Police Forensic Laboratory for full ballistic examination.

Jason Kobia Mucoka remains in custody and faces arraignment today on charges including Robbery with Violence, Illegal Possession of a Firearm and Threats to Kill.

The DCI affirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of the gun, the ammunition supply chain and every accomplice still at large. The agency further vowed to dismantle criminal networks in the area.
