Migori County residents and local traders are expected to experience immense benefits as a result of the construction of Suna-Marindi Modern Market which is pioneered by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA).

The market is being built with the aim of improving trading environment for a lot of traders who for a long time have been subjected to harsh conditions such as heavy rainfalls, scorching heat from the sun, and muddy grounds during the rainy seasons.
According to Interior and National Administration Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo, the safety, comfort and hygiene of the traders has for a long time been threatened due to the sale of goods in temporary stalls.
“We want to change this situation by offering well-designed modern stalls providing traders with secure and organized working spaces especially women, to have a safe, clean and supportive environment to grow their businesses”, Dr. Omollo said.
The modern market project will constitute improved sanitation facilities with new ablution blocks, paved access roads and lanes to ease movement within the area. The project also includes well-maintained parking zones which will serve both customers and traders, thereby easing congestion.
Beyond the facility’s physical structures, it will also be equipped with cold storage rooms for fresh produce to help improve the quality and shelf life of perishable goods, daycare facilities for trading mothers with children and also ICT hubs to enhance digital trade and online work.
Alongside strengthening Migori County’s position as a key commercial hub in South Nyanza, the Suna-Marindi Modern Market is expected to spur economic growth and restore dignity to local traders upon completion
PS Omollo also noted that the partnership between the devolved units and the national government is overseeing the construction of over 400 modern markets nationwide conforming to the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP).
