Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioner Ann Nderitu has highlighted some of the changes that have been introduced in the voter registration system.
Speaking at a local media station on Monday 29, September 2025, Nderitu affirmed that IEBC has improved the new voter registration system.
She revealed that the commission has introduced a single tablet with enhanced features, capable of conducting the whole registration exercise, compared to the previous system, BVR kits, which she said was bulky.
“What is different in this new voter registration is that we have a new system; right now, we only have a tablet. We will only be using a tablet to register voters, as we have also enhanced the features of that tablet,” Nderitu said.
“Before the 2022 general elections, the equipment for registration, which we used to call the BVR kits, was a bulky system that had a laptop and something that accompanied a whole system,” she added.
Nderitu also explained that apart from its efficiency, the new system is able to capture voter’s fingerprints and eyelids.
“The registration system now is not only able to capture your fingerprints but also your eyelids; it can capture more features, and it is faster,” Nderitu said.
“This continuous voter registration is based in the office,” Nderitu asserted.
Nderitu remarks comes after the IEBC launched the voter registration exercise on Monday September, 2025, inviting all eligible Kenyans to visit constituency offices countrywide except in areas currently holding by-elections.
“The Commission invites all new eligible voters and those seeking transfer of registration status and update of voter particulars/information to visit their preferred constituency offices with their national identity card or valid Kenyan passport to register,” IEBC said.
The mass registration will run for 30 days, ending on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.
Eligibility to register as a voter is based on several condition. A person must be at least 18 years old and a Kenyan citizen. They are also required to present a valid identification card or a Kenyan passport.
