The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall advisory warning that intensified rains are expected across several parts of the country between May 8 and May 14, 2026.

In the advisory released on May 7, the department said rainfall exceeding 20 millimetres within 24 hours is likely to affect regions in the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, the Central Highlands, and parts of the Southeastern lowlands.

According to the forecast, the rainfall intensity is expected to peak between May 10 and May 13 before gradually reducing from May 14.

However, showers are still expected to continue in several regions, including the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and Central Highlands areas such as Nairobi.

Counties expected to be affected include Migori, Nyamira, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, West Pokot, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kisii, Kericho, Bomet, Kiambu, Embu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Laikipia, Tharaka-Nithi, Meru, Nairobi, Narok, as well as parts of Turkana, Samburu, Kajiado, and Machakos counties.

The department warned residents to remain vigilant due to the risk of flooding, flash floods, poor visibility, and possible landslides in vulnerable areas.

Motorists and pedestrians have also been advised against driving or walking through flooded sections, while residents were cautioned against sheltering under trees or near grilled windows because of lightning risks.

The advisory further noted that people living in landslide-prone areas, especially around the slopes of the Aberdare Range and Mount Kenya, should exercise extra caution during the period.

The meteorological department said it will continue monitoring the situation and provide updates should there be any changes in the forecast.
