Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to be laid to rest on Sunday, in line with his personal wishes

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who chairs the burial committee has announced that the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga will be buried on Sunday October 19, 2025.

Speaking on Wednesday at Odinga’s residence in Karen, Nairobi, Kindiki informed that they had received a communication from the family and their lawyer regarding the former Prime Minister’s last wishes.

Kindiki stated that in accordance with Raila Odinga’s will, he was to be buried within 72 hours of his death.

He further noted that the committee was working around the clock to ensure that Odinga’s burial aligns with both state protocols and family wishes.

“We will move very fast in the next few hours and days. For the reason which has been communicated to us by the family of the late Prime Minister, following consultations between the family and the family lawyer. We have been advised as a committee by the family that it was the wish of Raila Odinga to be buried within the shortest time possible. The family has informed the committee that the timeline is 72 hours,” Kindiki said.

According to the Deputy President, Raila’s remains will be received at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by President William Ruto, members of the family and other officials and will then be escorted to Lee Funeral Home.

The body will then be moved to parliament buildings at 12:00 noon where the public will have the opportunity to pay their last respects.

“Upon arrival, the body will be received at the airport by the President, members of the family and other officials. Escorted to Lee Funeral Home, and at 12:00 noon, the body will be moved to the Parliamentary buildings at the CBD and in Parliament, there will be a public viewing of the body of the departed Prime Minister from 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm,” Kindiki explained.

On Friday October 17, Odinga will be accorded a State Funeral Service at Nyayo Stadium starting from 8:00 am, after which his body will be taken to his Karen residence.

Kisumu residents will have the chance to view the body of the late opposition leader on Saturday at Moi Stadium in Kisumu between 9am and 3pm, following which the body will travel by road from Kisumu City to Bondo for an overnight stay and burial on Sunday October 19, 2025.

“The burial of the late Prime Minister Raila Odinga will take place on Sunday and will be conducted according to the traditions of the Anglican Church to which Raila Odinga belonged,” Kindiki concluded
