Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested the prime suspect in the murder of Technical University of Kenya (TUK) lecturer Edgar Mokua, marking a major breakthrough in a case that sparked concern after the academic mysteriously disappeared earlier this month.
According to investigators, Mokua was last seen on July 6, 2026, at around 4:20 p.m. when he left his residence at Princes Park in Lavington. After he failed to return home and could not be reached, his worried relatives reported him missing at Muthangari Police Station.
Five days later, the search ended tragically when Mokua’s body was found at the City Mortuary. Police established that officers from Kiamumbi Police Station had earlier recovered the body near Woodcreek Academy before it was transferred to the mortuary.
The circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death prompted homicide detectives to take over the investigation.
Preliminary findings revealed that on the evening of his disappearance, Mokua spent several hours at Kettle Club in Lavington with two men and a woman before the group later proceeded to Ibiza Club at Lavington Mall.
Investigators said the three companions eventually left the club, leaving Mokua behind. He was never seen alive again.
Using forensic intelligence and investigative leads, detectives established that a grey Toyota Ractis, registration number KBZ 002R, was used to transport and dump Mokua’s body near Woodcreek Academy before speeding away from the scene.
The breakthrough led detectives to launch a manhunt that culminated in the arrest of Richard Gikuhe Mbugua, the registered owner of the vehicle, at Ruiru Blue Estate. Police also recovered the Toyota Ractis at Murera Farm in Juja, where it has since been impounded as an exhibit.
The DCI said the suspect remains in police custody undergoing processing ahead of his arraignment in court as investigations into the circumstances surrounding Mokua’s murder continue.
Authorities have indicated that investigations remain active as detectives work to establish the motive behind the killing and determine whether other individuals may have been involved in the crime.
