People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has declared that she will not accept the position of deputy president under the United Opposition, saying she will either contest for the presidency or fully support the candidate chosen to fly the coalition’s flag in the 2027 General Election.
During an interview on Tuesday, Karua said she was committed to the coalition’s agreed method of selecting its presidential candidate and would stand behind whoever is picked, provided the process is transparent and follows the alliance’s agreed rules.
Reflecting on her role as Raila Odinga’s running mate in the last General Election, Karua said that chapter had come to an end and she had no intention of seeking the deputy position again.
“I will support the one who is chosen in accordance with the rules we have set. The only thing I will not do is be a running mate. That one I say. I’ve no wish to be a running mate. I did a good run with Raila Odinga. That’s just about enough. But it’s all or nothing,” she said.
She maintained that her stand would not change even if another opposition leader secured the presidential ticket, insisting she would campaign for the coalition’s candidate but would not accept the second-in-command position.
“If I am not the flag bearer, I will support hundred per cent. But I won’t be a running mate,” she added.
Karua also outlined what she would prioritise if elected president, saying her administration would begin by restoring respect for the rule of law and ensuring public institutions operate effectively while protecting the rights of citizens.
“I will immediately enforce the rule of law; make sure that we adhere to the rules of the game that we have made as Kenya, safeguard Kenyans’ interests first, ensure that quality services are delivered in the critical areas of health, education, and service delivery in the various areas,” she said.
She expressed confidence that meaningful reforms could be achieved within the first three months in office, drawing from her experience in the NARC administration that assumed power in 2002.
“Within 90 days, you should have a functional state. And I say that with boldness because I saw it when we came in as the NARC administration. No law was changed, not even the constitution. And within a matter of days, things were running differently,” she said.
Karua argued that lasting change begins with leadership that honours its promises, noting that public servants and citizens are more likely to respond positively when leaders lead by example.
“When the top shows that their actions match their words, the people of Kenya take cue. Government employees take cue. And Kenyans are very good at assisting leadership in doing the work that is supposed to be done,” she said.
She added that accountability and efficient public service would be central pillars of her administration.
“So I would ensure that services, normal service delivery, resume, and that lawbreakers, whatever their position or rank, are dealt with. And that’s how you begin transformation,” she said.
Karua’s declaration narrows her options within the opposition alliance to either leading the presidential ticket or backing the eventual nominee.
Her position is also expected to influence ongoing discussions over the coalition’s leadership structure as parties continue negotiations ahead of the 2027 General Election.
