KeRRA Explains Deterioration of Ngong-Suswa Road, Cites Heavy Trucks as Cause of Damage

The Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) has attributed the deteriorating condition of the Ngong-Suswa Road to heavy overloading and increased traffic, as it moves to address concerns raised by members of the public.

In a public notice issued on Thursday, July 9, 2026, KeRRA said the road is currently undergoing phased maintenance to repair pavement damage and enhance safety for motorists.

“Kenya Rural Roads Authority has noted concerns raised by the members of the public on the current state of the Ngong-Suswa road,” KeRRA stated.

“The Authority wishes to clarify that Ngong-Suswa is currently undergoing maintenance in phases to address existing pavement distress caused by overloading and to improve safety for our road users,” the authority noted.

The Authority noted that the Ngong-Suswa Road has been open to traffic for the past eight years, with the final section completed in December 2025.

According to KeRRA, the road was designed to withstand vehicles carrying a maximum axle load of 10 tonnes per axle. However, the road has experienced traffic from vehicles carrying up to 50 tonnes, accelerating its deterioration.

“The Ngong-Suswa road was constructed with axle load limits of up to 10 tonnes per axle; however, the road has been subjected to traffic carrying up to 50 tonnes, which has accelerated its deterioration,” KeRRA said.

The Authority said the damage is particularly visible on the right side of the road when travelling towards Suswa.

To curb the impact of overloaded vehicles, KeRRA said it has installed the Ngong-Suswa-Ewaso-Kedong Virtual Weighbridge to monitor traffic and enforce axle load limits in line with the Traffic Act. The agency also said several offenders have already been arrested and charged.

KeRRA affirmed it remains committed to improving the road to accommodate growing traffic demand and urged motorists and transport operators to comply with the prescribed load limits to protect the infrastructure.

The explanation comes after widespread public concern over the road’s condition, with motorists questioning why it has deteriorated despite the huge investment made during construction.
