Kenya Red Cross Raises Alarm as 47 Schools Report Fire Incidents Since January

At least 47 schools across Kenya have reported fire incidents since January, highlighting an alarming trend that continues to threaten the safety of learners and disrupt education nationwide.

Data released by the Kenya Red Cross indicates that 16 of the reported fires occurred after the tragic Utumishi Academy fire, raising fresh concerns over the effectiveness of preventive measures in learning institutions.

The incidents have left a trail of injuries, with a total of 187 people treated. Of these, 132 were linked to the Utumishi Academy tragedy alone.

“School fires continue to be a menace. Since January, 47 schools have reported fire incidents, with 16 occurring after the tragic Utumishi Academy fire,” the Kenya Red Cross said.

Beyond the physical injuries, the disruptions have forced the closure of numerous schools. According to the report, 56 institutions were shut down following incidents of student unrest, while another 32 were closed as a precautionary measure over safety concerns.

The humanitarian organization said that a total of 104 schools have experienced disruptions arising from fires, unrest and related safety threats.

The Kenya Red Cross further renewed its call for urgent action to strengthen safety standards in schools, stressing that every learner has the right to a secure learning environment.

“Every learner deserves a safe place to learn. School safety cannot wait,” the organisation said, urging education stakeholders, school administrators, parents and government agencies to work together to prevent further tragedies and ensure that schools remain safe spaces for learning.
