Detectives have arrested five suspects believed to be members of a violent gang linked to a series of motor vehicle and livestock thefts across Kirinyaga, Nyeri, and Murang’a counties.

The intelligence-led operation was triggered after a Toyota Sienta, registration number KCY 467A, was reported stolen at Kiaruhiu Police Station.

Acting on leads, officers traced and arrested the suspected ringleader, identified as Martin Ndegwa Kinyua, in the Kagicha area while allegedly preparing to meet accomplices to dispose of the stolen vehicle.

Investigators later recovered the stolen vehicle in Skuta, Nyeri, where it had been fitted with fake registration plates KDJ 765J.

In a follow-up operation, detectives intercepted a Toyota Succeed, registration number KCS 523H, believed to have been used as a getaway vehicle. Four additional suspects were arrested: Bernard Njeru Kimathi, Edwin Muchira Mwinga, Tobias Macharia Mwangi, and James Muthama Muriuki.

A search of the vehicle reportedly uncovered items including ten sisal ropes, a panga, two knives, a rungu, and a master key, which investigators say point to coordinated criminal activity.

Authorities further allege that the gang is linked to livestock theft and slaughter operations, with stolen meat allegedly sold to illegal butchers in the region. The suspects are also said to be connected to an ongoing stock theft case before the Kerugoya Law Courts.

All five are in custody pending arraignment as police continue investigations and pursue additional suspects believed to be part of the wider network.
