DCI Launches Probe into Torching of Car Along Thika Road During Protests

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched investigations into the torching of a Mazda CX-5 along Thika Road during ongoing protests on Monday.

The incident, which was captured in viral video footage circulating online, is believed to have involved unidentified individuals who allegedly set the vehicle ablaze amid the demonstrations.

Authorities say the act endangered lives and caused significant property damage.

“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has received and is currently analysing viral video footage that is believed to feature individuals among the prime suspects involved in the torching of a Mazda CX-5 along Thika Road during today’s protests,” stated DCI.

Detectives have since opened a formal probe and are analysing the footage in an effort to identify those involved. The DCI said all leads are being pursued as part of efforts to ensure the suspects are apprehended and held accountable.

The investigative agency further urged members of the public who may recognise individuals seen in the videos, or who possess any relevant information to report to the nearest police

“The DCI urges members of the public who may recognise any individuals captured in the footage or possess relevant information regarding the incident that may aid in the ongoing investigations to share the information promptly at the nearest police station,” urged DCI.

The development follows a countrywide transport paralysis and demonstrations over rising fuel costs, which affected operations in several towns on Monday.

The protests were triggered by fuel price increases announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) in its May review, which raised the prices of super petrol and diesel by Ksh.16.65 and Ksh.46.29 per litre, respectively.
