Matatu Operators Announce 50% Fare Hike, Nationwide Strike on Monday

Public transport operators have announced a 50% increase in fares effective today May 15, following the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority’s (EPRA) decision to raise pump prices to record levels in its May-June fuel review.

EPRA’s announcement yesterday saw petrol prices go up by KSh16.65 per litre and diesel by KSh46.29 per litre, while kerosene remained unchanged.

The price of petrol in Nairobi will now retail at KSh214.25 per litre, while diesel will retail at KSh242.92 per litre. Kerosene remains unchanged at KSh152.78. EPRA said the revised prices will remain in effect until June 14.

In a statement issued on Friday, May 15, the Matatu Owners Association chairman Albert Karakacha said operators in Nairobi will, with immediate effect, increase fares by 50 per cent, noting that rising fuel costs have significantly affected their daily earnings and operational expenses.

The operators also announced a nationwide strike for all PSVs starting Monday, May 18, until the government addresses their concerns.

“On Monday, there will be strictly no movement of any vehicles. All the roads will be blocked until the government listens to our cry because we had been promised, but the promises did not come to fruition,” said Albert Karakacha.

“We are also urging all our investors in the public transport that, effective immediately, we are increasing our fares by 50 per cent.”

Karakacha said fare prices will stay elevated, adding that they will remain on strike until the government responds to their call for cheaper fuel.
