DCI launches investigation into death of Cyrus Jirongo after fatal crash along Nakuru–Nairobi Highway

The directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has established investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, who passed away in a fatal road accident along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway.

The DCI, in a press release dated December 16, 2025, said the crash occurred on the night of December 13th, 2025, at the Karai area and involved Hon. Jirongo’s Mercedes Benz vehicle and a public service vehicle (PSV) bus belonging to Climax Company Ltd.

“The accident involved Hon. Jirongo’s motor vehicle and a PSV bus, resulting in a head-on impact that pushed the deceased’s vehicle about 25 metres from the point of impact.” DCI statement read.

Preliminary findings show that the head-on collision took place at around 2:19 am. CCTV footage recovered from a nearby petrol station shows Hon. Jirongo entering the station briefly, before exiting and making a right turn back towards Nairobi, few moments before the PSV bus ran into his vehicle.

According to the DCI, a multiagency team of homicide detectives and forensic experts visited the accident scene, secured exhibits and reviewed CCTV footages which are now undergoing further analysis.

DCI also noted that Tyrus Kamau Githinji, the PSV driver, will be required to report to Naivasha Traffic base on December 22, 2025, to be investigated for dangerous driving, after CCTV ffotage showed that the bus he was driving rammed Jirongo’s car.

Mr. Githinji had earlier recorded a statement and undergone questioning and was released on cash bail, awaiting further investigations.

”Tyrus is out on cash bail pending further investigations into the offence of causing death by dangerous driving. He is required to report to the Naivasha Traffic Base on 22nd December 2025 for further police action,” DCI said.

The investigative agency also noted that their officers are examining the deceased’s movements prior to the accident and recording statements from witnesses, including individuals he interacted with earlier that night. Further statements will also be taken from passengers aboard the PSV bus.

While extending its condolences to Jirongo’s family, DCI assured the public of its commitment in ensuring a thorough, impartial and credible investigations in accordance with the law. 

DCI also noted that once investigations are complete, a comprehensive police file will be compiled and forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) perusal and advice.
