This is a milestone for new coach Sonia Bompastor, winning her debut season with the Blues after taking over from Emma Hayes, who departed from the club after dominating the competition for 5 consecutive years.

At the start of the season, Bompastor was a doubt for the club, as she faced the huge challenge of succeeding her predecessor, Hayes, who had led the team solidly for 5 seasons, winning all the games. Her biggest challenge was to continue the long streak — and she made it happen.

The incidents in Chelsea’s leadership resemble what happened in the men’s Premier League, where Arne Slot is set to lift the league title in his debut season with the club, succeeding Jurgen Klopp, who had laid a solid foundation for the new coach.

A late strike by Lucy Bronze revived the Blues’ hopes of clinching the title after Arsenal Women faltered and dropped points in a 5-2 loss to Aston Villa Women.

Bompastor said this came as a surprise win as they didn’t expect Arsenal to drop points, and that was their only advantage, as they needed a win to finalize their campaign.

“It’s a great achievement. It feels a bit unreal, but we weren’t expecting Arsenal to drop points tonight. Being away, being able to bounce back after the game on Sunday, and being able to win against a big team feels amazing,” she stated.

She alluded that her main aim was to end the season strong.

“I told my team before the game that it was a big opportunity for us to take a step closer to the title, even if I was not expecting this to be real. I’m so proud of my players, all the staff, the team, and the club,” she said in a post-match interview.

She added, “Starting the season, I was not expecting us to be in that position and able to achieve that with two games left. I knew we worked hard to fight until the end.”
