Homa Bay County Governor Gladys Wanga has urged the people of Homa Bay to maintain peace as the county continues to mourn the fatal shooting of Kasipul Constituency lawmaker, Charles Ong’ondo Were.
This comes as preparations are underway ahead of the burial, which is scheduled for Friday, May 9, 2025.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Wanga called for restraint to ensure Hon. Ong’ondo Were is given a befitting send-off. She also took note of President Ruto’s directive to investigative bodies to expedite investigations and prosecute the culprits.
“This is a sad, difficult, and trying time for Homa Bay County following the fatal shooting of Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were, the Member of Parliament for Kasipul Constituency. We have lost a beloved son of our soil, and mourn we must, but I call on all of us to exercise restraint as we continue to mourn,” Wanga’s statement read.
“We appreciate the firm directions given by the President to expedite the investigations and bring the culprits to book. We take note of the progress and arrests made and look forward to a final outcome of the matter.”
Speaking on Sunday in Migori County, President William Ruto affirmed his government’s commitment to safeguarding the lives of Kenyans. He promised that Were’s killers would be unmasked.
“Lawlessness and violence cannot be part of our culture. We have a country to protect. Stability, peace, and the unity of the nation are major ingredients in development and growing the economy.”
“We will get them; they will not succeed. They will have nowhere to hide, and we will go after their collaborators until we ensure that such an incident does not happen again in the country,” Ruto said.
Charles Ong’ondo Were was shot on Wednesday night, April 30, along Ngong Road in Nairobi. Police have so far arrested four suspects connected to the killing.
Government Chief Pathologist Johansen Oduor stated that the slain MP was shot five times. The bullets damaged major body organs, minimizing his chances of survival.
