Tengecha Boys students go on rampage, torch dormitory

Another fire outbreak was reported on Tuesday night after striking students at Tengecha Boys High School in Kapkatet, Bureti Sub-County, set ablaze one of the institution’s dormitory.

A dormitory at Tengecha Boys High School on fire

The unrest is said to have began at around 8pm, with the enraged learners allegedly torching the building which hosts more than 100 students and destroying property of unknown value.

Witnesses say the dormitory was burnt down moments after the students went on rampage. However, the Kapkatet local community intervened, preventing them from further causing huge damages.

Videos and images circulating online show the locals putting out the fire which had already gutted a large portion of the storey building.

The root cause of the protests is still uncertain.

This comes barely a week after a similar occurrence was witnessed at Litein Boys in Kericho, which is just eight kilometres from Tengecha Boys.

On Sunday, September 21, students at Litein Boys caused widespread destruction at the school, resulting in the indefinite closure of the institution.

It is reported that the protest was caused by the administration’s refusal to allow the students watch an English Premier League match between Arsenal and Manchester City.

Eight students have been arrested and arraigned in court following Sunday’s unrest and will remain in police custody for seven days as investigations into the arson incident continue.
