Security officers in Samburu County on Sunday successfully thwarted a livestock theft attempt after mounting a swift and coordinated operation that led to the recovery of 50 goats that were stolen.

Officers from the National Police Service (NPS), with the help of National Police Reservists (NPR), acted swiftly following a distress call from a resident of Marti Location.
The caller reported that a herdsman grazing goat along the Marti-Sulubei Road had been ambushed by unknown raiders, who forcefully drove away the livestock.
Responding immediately, the officers mobilized and launched a pursuit, tracking the suspects across the terrain. Their efforts led to the interception of the raiders a short distance from the scene, with the pursuit escalating into a fierce exchange of fire as the officers confronted the armed raiders.
According to police, the raiders were overpowered by the officers’ coordinated response and superior tactical deployment.
Unable to withstand the pressure, the suspects were forced to retreat into the thickets towards the Loibasat area, leaving behind the stolen livestock as they fled.
All the 50 goats were recovered successfully and later handed back to their rightful owner in the presence of the area Assistant Chief, bringing relief to the affected family and the local community.
Additionally, there were no reported cases of injuries among the officers or civilians during the operation. However, a manhunt has been launched to help trace and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
The incident highlights the persistent challenge of livestock theft and banditry in parts of Samburu and neighboring counties, where pastoral communities heavily depend on livestock for their livelihoods.
Security agencies have intensified patrols, intelligence-led operations and community policing initiatives aimed at combating the menace.
Police commanders in the region have reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding lives and properties of the members of the public, sounding a warning to criminals that security forces remain alerted and will respond decisively to any criminal activity.
The residents have been urged to remain vigilant and keep sharing timely information with the security agencies to enhance rapid response and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
