President William Ruto has announced government plans to construct a Standard Gaugue Railway (SGR) station in Ikonge, Nyamira County.

Speaking in Ikonge, Nyamira County, on Monday April 13, 2026, during his first day tour of the Gusii region, President Ruto affirmed that Nyamira County will not be left out of the recently launched Phase 2B SGR line from Naivasha to Kisumu.
Ruto stated that Nyamira will have its own station at Ikonge, set to be constructed at a cost of Ksh300 million.
“I am the one who pushed for the railway from Naivasha to pass through Ikonge, and here in Ikonge, I am building a Ksh 300 million railway station,” Ruto stated.
“This station will help you transport people and goods. I want you to organise yourselves because all the produce you want to move to Nairobi will be done through the SGR, so you can tell the naysayers to relax,” the president added
Residents and local leaders had expressed concern after the initial SGR map failed to include a station in Nyamira County, even though the line passes through Ikonge, with Kenya Railways listing stops in Narok, Mulot, Bomet, Sotik, Sondu, Ahero, and Kisumu.
President Ruto, who also launched the construction of a modern market in Ikonge, announced that he will travel to Italy next week to seek Ksh 1 billion for the upgrade of Nyamira County Hospital.
He also highlighted ongoing construction of key infrastructure projects across the country, including roads, markets, and affordable housing units.
“The other day, I launched the Eronge-Manga-Chepilat-Saiga Ngiya-Kineni-Nyansiongo-Tinderet road, a 62-km road project in Borabu constituency which is now at 58 per cent done. By the end of this year, we hope to complete the project,” Ruto said.
