Roots Party has picked Caleb Sunguti as its candidate in the upcoming Malava Constituency by-election. Sunguti will be the party’s first parliamentary candidate since its establishment.

In a statement released by George Wajackoyah, Sunguti was verified and vetted as per the party’s constitution and was deemed qualified to represent the party in the by-election. Wajackoyah also expressed his confidence in Sunguti’s candidacy and leadership, citing his strong educational background.
“Roots Party of Kenya settles on Caleb Sunguti for the Malava by-election. The first Roots Party parliamentary candidate. Vetted and verified by Chapter 6. Caleb Sunguti, B.Ed, MBA (Project Planning & Management), is a graduate of Kenyatta University, KCA University, and the University of Nairobi,” the Roots Party leader said.
The Malava Constituency by-election is set to take place after the reconstruction of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
The parliamentary seat was left vacant following the death of lawmaker Injendi Malulu two weeks ago. Injendi held the position on the just-dissolved Amani National Congress (ANC) party ticket between 2013 and 2025.
Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula, on March 3, 2025, directed Ikolomani MP Bernard Shinali to take charge of the Malava Constituency office and help facilitate programs that were being undertaken by the late legislator.
Apart from Malava, three other constituencies have stayed months without representation in the National Assembly, following delays in the IEBC’s reconstitution. They include Ugunja, whose MP Opiyo Wandayi was elevated to a Cabinet Secretary role in August 2024.
Banisa Constituency’s parliamentary seat has also remained vacant for close to 18 months now, following the death of Kullow Hassan in March 2023. Magarini constituents are yet to have representation in the Lower House following the nullification of Harrison Kombe’s election by the Supreme Court in March 2024.
