Kenya’s candidate in the just concluded AUC elections, Raila Odinga, has conceded defeat and sent a message of goodwill to Mahmoud Youssouf, the winner of the chairpersonship race.

Speaking to reporters at the AU headquarters after the conclusion of the election process, Odinga maintained that his move to concede was a sign that the continent is rooted in democracy. He also thanked the heads of state for participating in the process.
“I concede defeat and want us to use this as an example of strengthening democracy in our continent. I wish Mahmoud Ali Youssouf all the best and success in his undertaking,” said Odinga.
“I also want to thank both those who voted for me and those who did not, for exercising their democratic right.”
Despite losing the AUC seat, Odinga affirmed his commitment to the growth of the AU and his readiness to offer his services to the Union in different capacities if called upon.
“My plan now is to go back home. I have so many things to do back home. I am not bitter; I’m very happy indeed. I am still available to offer services to the continent in any other capacity,” he said.
Odinga lost to Djibouti’s Mahmoud Youssouf, who won the seat in the seventh round with a total of 33 votes.
