President William Ruto officially commissioned the Sh1.5 billion 132-kilovolt (KV) Lessos-Kabarnet Transmission Line, a major power infrastructure project expected to improve electricity supply in Baringo and Elgeyo-Marakwet counties.

The transmission line, developed by the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) has been connected to the national grid and is designed to provide stable, affordable and reliable electricity to many households, public institutions, and businesses within the region.
It is also expected to reduce frequent power outages while supporting the rising demand for electricity driven economic expansion and population growth.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony held in Kabarnet, President Ruto said that the project highlights the commitment put in place by the government to ensure equitable access to development across the country.
“This transmission line will power homes, schools, hospital and businesses, while creating new opportunities for our youth and entrepreneurs”, the president said, emphasizing that reliable electricity is a critical enabler of economic growth and improved service delivery, more so in previously undeserved areas.
President Ruto also noted that while empowering entrepreneurs and young people to pursue income-generating activities, the new transmission line will support key social amenities such as schools, health facilities, and water systems.
According to him, access to stable electricity will ensure both small and medium-sized enterprises operate more efficiently, lower production costs and attract new investments into the region.
The Head of State added that the project will bring about employment opportunities both directly and indirectly, as improved power supply creates a favorable environment for industrial growth and local manufacturing. He affirmed that the government remains committed to ensuring expansion of energy infrastructure a part of its broader development agenda.
Both local leaders and residents welcomed the commissioning of the transmission line, describing it as a transformative milestone for the region. They said the improved power supply will stimulate economic activity, enhance agricultural value addition and improve living standards by supporting modern services and businesses.
The Lessos-Kabarnet Transmission Line forms part of the ongoing national government’s efforts to strengthen the electricity grid, enhance energy security and ensure the affordable and reliable power is available across the country.
