Police have arrested yet another suspect linked to the fatal shooting of the late Kasipul lawmaker Charles Ong’ondo Were.
According to a statement released on Wednesday morning, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) stated that the detectives who apprehended the suspect, identified as Amos Barasa Kasili, were acting on intelligence that led them to the Kibera Darajani area.
The DCI revealed that Amos Kasili is suspected to be the rider of the motorcycle that ferried Were’s killers on that fateful day. Additionally, Kasili was found in possession of the motorcycle in question during his arrest.
“It was revealed that Barasa served as the rider of the motorcycle with registration number KMFZ 413W, a Bajaj Boxer, which the assailants used to trail the MP’s vehicle and later as a getaway bike after the attack. Upon his arrest, Barasa was found in possession of the motorcycle in question,” the DCI statement read in part.
“Investigations uncovered that Barasa is a habitual criminal who masquerades as a Boda Boda operator, often collaborating with armed criminal gangs during their operations.”
Following an intensive interrogation, Kasili disclosed to the detectives that he made a deal with the assailants and later received a compensation fee of Ksh. 50,000.
Additionally, the motorcycle recovered from Barasa matches the description of the bike captured by CCTV footage near Parliament, which was seen trailing the late MP’s vehicle. The rider is currently being processed for arraignment as investigations continue, with authorities committed to ensuring that justice is served.
Charles Ong’ondo Were was shot along Ngong Road on the evening of April 30, just minutes after leaving Parliament Buildings. A postmortem conducted by government Chief Pathologist Johansen Oduor revealed that he was shot five times, with the bullets damaging major body organs, thereby thwarting his chances of survival.
Leaders have since called on all investigative agencies to expedite the probe and ensure that his killers are brought to book.
