Police officers in Webuye have recovered a large quantity of liquid suspected to be ethanol inside a lorry that appeared to have been abandoned near a petrol station.

In a statement on Wednesday February 25, 2026, the National Police Service (NPS) stated that officers grew suspicious after spotting a lorry parked under unclear circumstances.
They proceeded to inspect it and, to their surprise, discovered 32 barrels, each with a capacity of 250 litres, containing ethanol.
The service further opined that the quantity involved suggests that the consignment is a possible case of an unlawful transportation and distribution chain which is under investigations.
“National Police Service officers based in Webuye yesterday impounded a lorry that had been seemingly abandoned near a petrol station,” NPS said.
“A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of thirty-two barrels, each with a capacity of 250 litres, containing a liquid suspected to be ethanol. The substantial quantity recovered points to a possible case of unlawful transportation and distribution, which is now under active investigation.”
The lorry and the recovered barrels were taken to Webuye Police Station as police as investigation to establish the owner continue. The police added that they are also pursuing the driver and anyone connected to the consignment.
“The motor vehicle and the recovered consignment have been detained at Webuye Police Station pending verification, sampling, and forensic analysis. Investigations are ongoing to establish the ownership of the vehicle and to identify and apprehend the driver and any other individuals connected to the incident,” NPS noted.
NPS reaffirmed their ongoing commitment to stopping the sale of illicit alcohol and ensuring public safety.
