Police in Kasarani raid illegal brew den in Soweto area, destroy 2,000 litres of illicit liquor

A coordinated police operation targeting illegal alcohol production and drug-related activities has led to the destruction of thousands of liters of illicit brew in Soweto, Nairobi.

The exercise, conducted by the National Police Service, is part of an ongoing campaign to address rising concerns over drug and substance abuse, which authorities say continues to strain communities socially, economically, and health-wise.

During the raid, officers confiscated and destroyed about 2,000 litres of kangara, a locally brewed illicit drink, alongside equipment used in its production.

The operation also involved dismantling makeshift brewing sites believed to be supplying the substance within the area.

“A targeted operation aimed at curbing illicit brewing and narcotic drug activities was successfully conducted yesterday in Soweto, Nairobi,” the service said in a statement.

Police noted that removing such operations from circulation is a key step in disrupting illegal supply networks while sending a strong warning to those involved in the trade.

“The dismantling of these operations not only disrupts illegal supply chains but also serves as a deterrent to individuals engaged in such activities,” the statement added.

Authorities maintain that the crackdown is part of a broader strategy focused on prevention, enforcement, and community safety.

The presence of illicit brews like kangara has often been linked to serious health risks and broader social challenges, including addiction and crime.

Reaffirming its commitment, the police said similar operations will continue across the country to ensure lasting impact.

“The National Police Service reaffirms that similar operations will continue to ensure long-term impact, reinforce prevention strategies, and support national efforts to combat drug and substance abuse effectively,” the statement read.

Residents have been urged to cooperate with law enforcement by reporting illegal activities, as the government intensifies efforts to curb the spread of harmful substances.
