Police Foil Planned Terror Attack in Nairobi, Recover Weapons and Explosives

Security agencies have foiled a planned terror attack in Nairobi following a high-level counter-terrorism operation led by officers from the National Police Service (NPS), together with other security agencies.

The operation, which later resulted in a raid on a suspect hideout within the city, followed months of intensive intelligence gathering, surveillance, and data analysis targeting individuals who are believed to be associated to the Somalia-based extremist group Al-Shabaab.

Acting on verified intelligence, officers moved swiftly to neutralize the threat.

During the raid, the officers recovered five AK-47 assault rifles, twenty magazines loaded with a total of 600 rounds of ammunition, six hand grenades, and a Makarov pistol loaded with 24 rounds of ammunition. They also seized medical kits and logistical supplies, proving an advanced preparation for a major attack.

According to security officials, the cache of weapons and explosives highlighted the gravity of the plot and the potential scale of destruction, if the operation was not disrupted in time.

The successful operation brought to light the effectiveness of sustained inter-agency cooperation and intelligence-led policing in countering extremist activities.

“This operation reflects our unwavering commitment to disrupt terrorist networks, neutralize imminent threats, and protect lives and property,” a statement issued by NPS read.

Additionally, the service noted that the intervention demonstrated tireless efforts put in place by security and intelligence officers who work around the clock, often behind the scenes, to ensure the country is safeguarded.

Specialized units, such as the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) and the Special Operations Group (SOG), alongside other security formations, were involved in the operation.

The units confirmed that heightened security measures remain in place across the capital and nationwide at large, as vigilance is maintained against potential threats.

The National Police Service reassured members of the public of its unending dedication to curb all forms of criminality and urged citizens to remain alert and report any suspicious activities. “We remain fully committed to ensuring the safety and security of all Kenyans, residents, and visitors,” the statement added.

Investigations into the syndicate and its possible local and international links are still underway as security agencies intensify efforts to dismantle extremist cells operating within the region.
